Job Description

The Accountant I position is highly organized and responsible in support of the overall fiscal activities of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit. Accountants in the Finance Department provide accurate and timely financial services to Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties, the State of Florida, the Judges within the circuit, and all other supporting departments. Requires a mix of organizational and analytical skills.

Examples of Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Purchase Goods and Services: Establish and maintain relationships with new and existing vendors ensuring cost-effectiveness. Review purchasing requisitions from assigned departments. Determine appropriate funding source, account numbers, and purchasing method for type of purchase requested. Process requisitions according to guidelines set by funding source.

Perform Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Duties: Audit invoices for accuracy and completeness. Prepare and process invoices for payment to vendors. Ensure invoices are paid in a timely manner while adhering to departmental procedures. Prepare money received for deposit. Generate financial reports on a recurring basis. Maintain records of financial transactions including fixed asset inventory. File and scan purchasing documents. Prepare fixed asset property control forms.

Perform periodic physical inventory count: Audit and reconcile financial transactions. Audit financial transactions for each funding source. Reconcile central database to financial statements from each funding source. Prepare journal entry requests as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Training Guidelines

Associate degree in business, finance, accounting or related field or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; and

One year of related accounting experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional relevant experience may substitute for the recommended educational level on a year-for-year basis.

Competencies

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk. Occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Advanced understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general accounting functions.

High-Level knowledge of spreadsheets is crucial and experience with word processing tools is essential for record-keeping functions.

Ability to:

Work out numbers, generate reports, and find discrepancies as well as cost-saving opportunities. 

Work independently and as a team member.

Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Provide effective, accurate, professional, polite, friendly, and prompt customer service to the public and other agency personnel.

Maintain confidentiality concerning sensitive information.

Type a minimum of thirty-five words per minutes.

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Write routine reports and correspondence.

Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Compute rate, ratio, percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to evaluate problems, isolate key issues, research and develop alternative solutions and to present management with recommendations that include, at a minimum, the advantages, the disadvantages, and the cost and staff impact of recommendations.

Use a personal computer, telephone, copier, fax machine, and various other office equipment.
